Alltel Wireless and Melodeo have launched Axcess Mobilcast service. This service enables Alltel Wireless customers to easily search and listen to thousands of podcasts on their wireless phones.

Axcess Mobilcast offers updated podcast episodes and radio shows from popular sources such as NPR and CNN, as well as thousands of independent podcasts from all over the world. The programs are short in duration and cover a wide range of subjects including comedy, music.
Axcess Mobilcast is available on several popular Alltel phones. A simple interface allows listeners to browse categories or search programs with no wait time. In 1943, Allied Telephone Co., a small business specializing in installing telephone poles and cabling for telephone companies across Arkansas, was founded by Charles Miller and Hugh Willbourn, Jr.
Alltel's modern history begins in 1983 when Allied Telephone and Mid-Continent Telephone, founded by Weldon W. Case and his brother, Nelson H., merged. In 1985, Alltel launched its first wireless system in Charlotte, North Carolina and by 1993 Alltel had opened its first wireless retail store. Alltel was named to the S&P 500 Index in 1994. By 1996 long-distance service was offered and in 1997 the company's wireless and wireline businesses converged into a single organization.
On December 9, 2005, Alltel announced that it would become a wireless-only company, simultaneously merging and building a spin-off company for its wireline services. [1] This company would then be merged with Valor Telecom, which on April 10, 2006 announced it will take the name Windstream Communications. The merger-spinoff process ended July 17, 2006, when Windstream began operations.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Alltel is introducing a new prepaid wireless service that's all about "U." U personalized prepaid from Alltel offers an expanded phone selection, plans and features over America's largest wireless network. The service is designed for customers who want to customize a wireless plan to their needs and tastes.
"U personalized prepaid is flexible, hip, user-friendly, and built around what customers want - more control, exciting features and the latest phones on the largest national network," said Frank O'Mara, executive vice president of marketing for Alltel.
"Whether it's paying by the minute, day, or month, prepaid customers can select any of our phones and have a choice of enhanced features, including access to popular ringtones, games and wallpapers to further customize their service. It's really all about U," O'Mara said.
